Provincial police have issued a warning to be wary of all ice on local lakes and rivers, despite the arrival of winter weather. Police say no ice is without some risk. - Ice Fishing, walking, and cross country skiing, all require at least 4 inches (10 cm) of new clear hard ice. It’s risky and dangerous to ride your snowmobile this weekend even though there’s snow on the ground,  say Ontario Provincial Police and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs The smart choice is not to ride a snowmobile anywhere this weekend, the organizations say in a press release. Passenger died in crash on Highway 28 near Bancroft

BANCROFT – A resident of  Stoney Creek died in a tw0-vehicle crash on Highway 28 east of Bancroft just before midnight Nov. 20, 2010. Rescue workers and police were called at 11:45 p.m.,  Bancroft provincial police reported Nov. 22, 2010. A red Dodge pickup truck was traveling west on Highway 28 and a black Subaru car was heading east on Highway 28. The Subaru entered the oncoming lane and struck the Dodge pickup. BANCROFT – Watch for wildlife on the roads this time of year, local provincial police detachments advise. Here’s a press release from Bancroft OPP: Collisions with wild animals can result in serious vehicle damage, personal injury or even death.  There were over 140 vehicle/wildlife collisions on Bancroft area roads in 2009 and most of these collisions involved deer. The peak months were September, October, November and December.  Most of these collisions occurred between dusk and dawn. Wollaston might join new OPP contract for north Hastings

Hastings County may not be seeking a county-wide contract for policing with the OPP, but that’s not stopping some northern municipalities from pursuing the idea, according to a story in the Belleville Intelligencer. Bancroft, Faraday, Carlow/Mayo, Wollaston, Hastings Highlands and Tudor-Cashel officials will soon meet with senior Ontario Provincial Police officials to talk about a joint contract to save money, instead of individual contracts, the story says.
