It’s risky and dangerous to ride your snowmobile this weekend even though there’s snow on the ground,  say Ontario Provincial Police and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs The smart choice is not to ride a snowmobile anywhere this weekend, the organizations say in a press release. While there’s been considerable snowfall in some areas, the ground underneath is not yet frozen properly. The snow itself has little base or substance, thereby providing insufficient protection from crevices, ruts, rocks, stumps or other hidden obstacles. COE HILL — A high water advisory remains in force by the Crowe Valley Conservation Authority, after recent precipitation. Here’s the link to the authority’s flood water levels information,  where the safety bulletin was posted Nov. 30, 2010. Here’s part of the advisory for much of northern Hastings County, including Wollaston and Limerick townships: THE CVCA IS STRONGLY URGING EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN TO STAY AWAY FROM ALL DAMS, WEIRS, HYDRO GENERATING PLANTS, BRIDGES AND ALL WATERCOURSES.

Teen handed $490 ticket for driving past school bus

MARMORA – Police handed a Marmora teen a $490 ticket for failing to stop for a school bus on Nov. 9, 2010. Centre Hastings provincial police were called about a 7:30 a.m. incident that day on Matthew Street in Marmora.  The bus was stopped with it’s flashing lights and stop sign activated. While passengers were loading a car drove past. The 17 year old was issued a ticket for failing to stop for a school bus.

BANCROFT – Watch for wildlife on the roads this time of year, local provincial police detachments advise. Here’s a press release from Bancroft OPP: Collisions with wild animals can result in serious vehicle damage, personal injury or even death.  There were over 140 vehicle/wildlife collisions on Bancroft area roads in 2009 and most of these collisions involved deer. The peak months were September, October, November and December.  Most of these collisions occurred between dusk and dawn. Blast heavily damages cottage on Crowe Lake near Marmora

MARMORA — Investigators are trying to figure out why a cottage exploded Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010 on Crowe Lake near Marmora. Emergency crews arrived about 5:30 p.m. and found a house that had sustained heavy damage, Central Hastings OPP report. The incident is under investigation by the Central Hastings OPP crime unit, the Ontario Fire Marshal and the Ontario Technical Safety Authority.
