Last month, a fungus that leads to mass deaths of bats was found in the Bancroft-Minden area. Now it’s been found in Hastings, Peterborough, Grey and Renfrew counties, and in Kirkland Lake, the Toronto Star reports. “White nose syndrome” was first found in Albany, N.Y. in 2006 and spread has since spread to 11 U.S. states. The fungus disturbs sleep patterns of bats, causing them to awake too early from hibernation. Without insets available to eat, the bats starve. Click here to read the story from thestar.com.
