H1N1 flu vaccine clinics running this week in Bancroft and Madoc for ‘priority groups’ of local residents

HASTINGS & PRINCE EDWARD – More pandemic H1N1 flu clinics have been scheduled by the local health unit.

The Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit is working to get vaccine first to those most vulnerable to complications from pH1N1 influenza. When the priority groups have been covered, the rest of the population will be able to receive their vaccine.

“We’re working as fast as we can to get vaccine to the people who need it the most,” says Dr. Richard Schabas, medical officer of health for the Hastings & Prince Edward Counties Health Unit.

“Unfortunately, our vaccine supplies are limited and it may be several weeks before we can offer the vaccine more widely.”

At priority H1N1 clinics running Wednesday, Oct. 28 to Friday, Oct. 30, the following groups can receive their H1N1 immunizations:

  • people under the age of 65 with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, asthma, cancer or kidney disease
  • pregnant women
  • household contacts or care providers of infants less than six months of age
  • household contacts or care providers of someone who is immunocompromised
  • children six months to four years of age (children less than five years of age)
