OPP ask motorists to drive smart in winter storms

WINTER DRIVING

With the anticipated arrival of our first snowstorm of the season, the Peterborough County OPP would like to remind motorists to make the appropriate adjustments to their driving in order to ensure safe travel on our roadways.

Please leave yourself extra time for travel. You will need this time to ensure that your vehicle’s windows are properly cleared and to accommodate the slower speeds you will need to travel in order to maintain proper control of your vehicle. Speed is the primary factor in winter collisions – not snow.

Remain off the roads if at all possible during inclement weather.

If you must travel, make sure that you have warm clothing, a shovel and a cell phone. If you are involved in a collision or experience a mechanical breakdown you can lose your heat very quickly and may have to wait a longer time for assistance. Emergency services and towing companies tend to experience increased calls for service during storms.

Check your vehicle’s tires to ensure that they have proper tread.

Please do your part to ensure our roads our safe. Plan ahead and adjust your driving!
