ATV crashes through ice near Peterborough, driver charged


SMITH-ENNISMORE-LAKEFIELD TWP– On Sunday January 10, 2010 at approximately 2:43 P.M. officers responded to an All Terrain Vehicle through the ice beneath the Chemong Causeway.

The vehicle, a 2004 Yamaha ATV, had been driven onto the snow covered surface beneath the bridge and it broke through into the fast moving current.

Neither the driver, a 41 year old Ennismore man or his passenger, his 3 year old daughter were injured.

As a result of the incident the driver has been charged for Dangerous Driving and alcohol was a factor.

The driver is scheduled to appear at the Provincial Courts in Peterborough on Thursday February 18, 2010.


Inspector Mike Reynolds reminds the public to be certain of the ice conditions before travelling on the any of the area ice covered rivers and lakes.

Remember, enjoy yourself when travelling by foot, snow machine or all terrain vehicle but when you’re crossing the ice of a lake or a river “If you don’t know, don’t go”.
